Although celebrated for his work in three dimensions, Calder was also a prodigious painter. In the 1940s, as he became increasingly prolific in his sculptural output, he delved into gouache painting. Even when working in two dimensions, Calder adeptly conveyed a sense of movement using select curvilinear motifs. These intuitively distilled patterns, rhythms, and symbols reappear across mediums—in paintings, drawings, sculptures, and jewelry—expressing endless motion.
