ModJong Customized Mahjong Tiles Set
Originating in China in the mid-1800s, Mahjong became a worldwide craze in the 1920s. Now, a century later, the game is experiencing a fresh surge in popularity.
Starting with the traditional iconography of Mahjong, designer Tom Dolle, together with Mahjong expert Lise Baadh, created this set to reflect a Modernist aesthetic, giving it the name Modjong™. Clean symbols, bright colors, and thoughtful details make this set a distinctive addition to both traditional Chinese play and newer American variations. The design pays homage to the bold, timeless graphics popular from the 1950s through the 1970s.
While the tiles feature unique designs, they correspond with traditional Chinese and American Mahjong sets, including Bamboos (Bams), Characters (Craks), Dots, Winds, Dragons, Flowers, Jokers, and blanks. Each tile is made of layered acrylic in white, yellow, and orange. When shuffled, the tiles create the distinctive high-pitched “clacking” sound associated with Mahjong, traditionally said to resemble the chattering of sparrows.
